What is Chandrayana ? The moon is responsible for energy within our body and minds. Our vedic calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and our body cycles also. Ekadasi, the full and new moon , i.e the 11th and 15th days of the moon are the most important. When we regulate our diet on these days we get the most benefit. What is this diet regulation in Chandrayana ? When its full moon the moon is in full energy , When its new moon It has least energy. So in Chandrayana we begin with eating with a full plate on Full moon and then we gradually reduce to zero on new moon and then gradually increase it from new moon to full moon. It is a stepwise reduction and stepwise increase. If we fast all of a sudden the body takes time to recover, when it is done step wise it adapts nicely and brings about the changes we need. What do you do as you reduce eating? The main activities are yoga, meditation and study of scripture. Fasting gives the body and mind an opportunity to rest and meditate. When we eat too much the body and mind are completely busy and there is no question of relaxation. By proper practice of meditation mind relaxes.
